Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Cosciasco, Mississippi. Her real name is Orpah Gail Winfrey. The midwife who delivered the baby inadvertently switched the letters on the girl's birth certificate. Winfrey denies this information and says that she herself changed her name because friends had difficulty pronouncing it. At the age of 6, Winfrey and her mother moved to the old ghetto neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Oprah now lives near Santa Barbara, California.




Parents: Vernita Lee's mother worked as a maid, and her father, Vernon Winfrey, was a miner, then a barber, later a city councilman. They were never legally married. When Oprah was born, her father was in the army and her mother decided to move north. The girl spent the first six years of her life in the rural wilderness, living with her grandmother, Hattie Mae.



Oprah could read from the age of three, taught by her grandmother. At age 19, Winfrey began anchoring the evening news and was the youngest local media reporter (CBS television) and the first black female reporter for Nashville television.
In 1976, she moved to Baltimore's WJZ-TV as a six o'clock news assistant and became one of the hosts of the morning talk show Baltimore Talks.


In 1985 Oprah was offered to star in the film "The Color Purple", the other name of the tape - "Flowers of purple fields".
